The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a deeply immersive and choice-driven historical fantasy visual novel inspired by the rich tapestries of Irish mythology and Celtic folklore. Set in mid-19th century Ireland, you embark on a journey as a tenant farmer whose life becomes intertwined with the mythic world of Tír na nÓg. This once unified land is now divided between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, each with their own agendas and mystical powers. Will you manage to escape and return home with your stolen belongings, or will fate have other plans for you?

The World of Tír na nÓg

While navigating this enchanting yet treacherous land, you’ll encounter six members of the Tuatha Dé Danann—“Tribe of the Goddess Danu.” These powerful beings are divided between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, each with their own enigmatic nature. You must decide who to trust and befriend—a choice that could either be deeply rewarding or perilously fraught. The capricious fairies of Tír na nÓg are known for their unpredictable nature, making every decision a gamble.

Development and Release

The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a Kickstarter-funded project currently in development. Due to its extensive narrative scope, the game will be released serially over several years at a discounted price. The earlier you purchase the game, the more cost-effective it will be in the long run, and you’ll only need to buy it once. Regional pricing options are available on our Steam listing.

Partial Routes and Demo Availability

As of November 1, 2024, you can play half of Shae and Maeve’s routes, both approximately 50k words. If you’re unsure about investing in an unfinished game, you can try out our free demo first. The demo includes Vol. 1, Book of the Traveller—the pre-route content. Despite some minor differences following our August 1, 2024 re-release of the demo, it provides a comprehensive taste of what to expect from the full game.

Linguistic Elements and Cultural Integrity

The game’s setting necessitates instances of characters speaking in Gaeilge (the Irish language). All instances of Gaeilge are linked to an internal translation tool voiced by Nigel McKeon, a Gaeilgeoir—someone fluent in Irish.

Customization Options for the MC

The main character is entirely yours to shape. At minimum, you must choose a nickname and pronouns. Additionally, you have four default appearances to select from, with the option to upload your own artwork (instructions included in the game files). You can also choose to discard the True Name or keep it, adding an extra layer of personalization.

Relationship Choices and Character Diversity

All routes—current and upcoming—feature both romantic and platonic choice options. Whether you’re interested in romance or making friends, you’ll have the freedom to explore different relationships. Each route culminates in a good end or bad one, depending on your choices. The cast includes two men, two women, and two non-binary characters. Some characters are asexual or on the aromantic spectrum, which may impact aspects of their romances.

Technical Considerations for Mac Users

If you’re a Mac user experiencing issues launching the game via the Itch direct download, refer to our troubleshooting guide before posting a comment. We strongly recommend purchasing the game through Steam instead of Itch if you’re a Mac user; it’s the best way to avoid launching issues.

The game contains secrets waiting to be uncovered, with more yet to come. Prepare yourself for an abundance of horse-related shenanigans. However, be aware that The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) deals with subjects that may be upsetting to some players, including discussions and depictions of war, famine, abuse, fantasy violence, and mild blood.
