Winter in the Andatal region is notoriously unforgiving, but the community has always found ways to persevere. This year, however, seems different. Unlike any other time, it seems like the people are facing their darkest hour.

The Story and Gameplay

Sacrarium Gelus is a captivating short fantasy-romance Visual Novel (VN) where you can personalize the protagonist’s name and pronouns. The story follows this customizable character through one of the most challenging periods of their life. A mysterious curse mark has suddenly appeared on them, prompting their village to expel them into the harsh winter landscape.

To escape certain death, the protagonist must embark on a perilous journey across the treacherous Mount Gelus, infested with malevolent forces. Along the way, they encounter Heimos, a former human who has transcended to become the living god of medicine and winter. Legends surrounding Heimos abound, but the truth about this enigmatic figure remains largely unknown until they meet him directly.

Interactions and Choices

The interactions between the protagonist and Heimos are pivotal to the narrative and open to various interpretations. Will these encounters begin on a positive note? Will the protagonist learn more about Heimos during their stay or maintain a safe distance? The freedom to choose how to engage with Heimos adds a dynamic layer to the story, allowing players to shape the narrative based on their preferences.

Development and Features

Sacrarium Gelus was created as part of the Winter VN Jam 2022, with pre-production beginning on November 5th. The game is expected to receive an editing update post-launch to refine the story and address any grammatical or spelling issues.

Content Warning and Endings

The game contains content warnings for religious fanaticism, sickness, mentions of stalking (not depicted in-game), mild to intermediate bodily injury (mentioned but not shown visually), body horror, chronic pain, brief mentions of suicide, discussions of death, and existential dread of immortality. Additionally, there is the possibility of protagonist death and depictions of severe paranoia.

The game includes several endings: two bad, one neutral, and two good with four variations. Players can also unlock a variety of CGs and enjoy approximately 30 minutes of playtime per session, depending on their reading speed.

Credits and Artwork

Sacrarium Gelus was created by Stygian Eye Stories, with writing and primary coding handled by their team. The background art was contributed by motaberrie, while Rian provided the sprite art. Faust oversaw the proofreading process, and Miltra contributed to the secondary coding. The original soundtrack was composed by Soulless (Francis Tello), with the GUI template “Spooky Raven” by Jaime Scribbles Games undergoing some edits. Additionally, template assets were used for itch.io page labels.
